INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
Ringwood Heights offers a comprehensive
developmental curriculum implemented by a team of dedicated, caring
professionals. We are a leading school in the development of literacy and
numeracy profiles and in the planning and development of integrated units of
work.
Children's learning experiences occur within an
integrated curriculum, with the emphasis being on the integration of the
'content' areas of curriculum. These include literature, studies of society and
environment, science, technology and health. The 'process' areas of the
curriculum - speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, mathematics,
drama, art/craft and music are the means by which children express their
understandings of the curriculum content. We work on a 2 year curriculum cycle
where each level explores 2 units per term/year.
ENGLISH AND LITERACY
PROGRAM
We have a comprehensive literacy program, which
embraces the principles of the Government's Early Years Strategy. Dedicated
literacy teaching time with a focus on small group teaching caters for
individual strengths and needs. A high level of trained parent helpers
maximises comprehensive school resources which include, listening posts, big
books, literature sets and computer programs. The successful implementation of the program
is well supported through an additional assistance program and our literacy
coordinator. Literacy across the school is further enhanced through a
literature based library program.
MATHS AND NUMERACY PROGRAM
Numeracy learning occurs within the framework of a
whole school approach to Maths. The curriculum is structured around real like
contexts, which are relevant to the children. This provides interest and
purpose and assists learning by linking previous experiences and knowledge. Rich assessment tasks and open-ended problem
solving activities are planned together by teams of teachers at each learning
level.
ARTS PROGRAM
There is a comprehensive Arts program operating across
all levels. It includes visual arts,
dance, media and music. The School Council supports a biennial Artist In School program which has 100 per cent student
participation and high levels of adult and community involvement.
INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES PROGRAM
Our school integrates computer technology across
all curriculum programs. Students are
exposed to and use various forms of information and communication technologies
daily. Each classroom has its own group
of computers plus a shared computer pod outside each classroom. We have interactive whiteboards at every
level in our school which students and teachers use in a variety of ways. The Ringwood Heights Primary School Mini Lab
has an interactive whiteboard and IMAC computers that each class uses weekly.
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL
EDUCATION PROGRAM
At RHPS, we have a diverse physical education
program and conduct many activities on our well equipped school grounds. This
includes our oval, with football posts and cricket nets, and basketball
/netball asphalt areas for other games and sports. Our program includes swimming lessons, an
outdoor education program, Junior Sports Day, Senior House Sports, Cross
Country running, athletics, Interschool Sports, Perpetual Motor Program (PMP). Local facilities within our community provide
avenues to extend our program further and we often conduct event such as our
House Sports at athletics tracks and Cross Country at local reserves.
